A perfect day out in the city: Outdoors
The city of Willemstad is unique in the sense that it is multi-faceted and has something to offer everyone, regardless of travel type. It offers everything from the history and architecture to cafe culture, art and outdoor activities. Centrally located in the middle of the island, it is accessible and the perfect place to wander and explore.
As an outdoor industry guide, my perfect day usually starts with something active with my friends. This can be anything such as freediving, rock climbing, hiking or just wandering about with my camera in hand. A little later in the morning it’s time for a coffee and a quick bite. Something that’s lesser known is the fact that we have amazing coffee roasteries, right here on the island.

While in the city, don’t forget the instagrammable sites and locations such as the various art and murals you can find throughout the city. Also, one of my favorite hidden gems is the Hirsch & Reich second hand book store. There’s a little whimsy around every corner.
For those wanting to dive into our local cuisine Plasa Bieu is a lunch time staple and a great opportunity for those with adventurous palettes to try local dishes such as Yambo and Mondongo. If you’re looking for a more modern fusion twist in regards to local dishes, try Rustique. For the seafood lovers, there’s Kas di Piskado Purunchi and De Visserij. If you’re heading off the beaten path, you gotta try the Pastechi and Goat Burger at Williwood.
As founder of COIA, a local conservation NGO, I can’t stress enough on checking out the various conservation projects happening on the island. I enjoy rolling up my sleeve to help out with various conservation projects. There are some great causes such as our local coral and mangrove nurseries and the queen conch hatchery. Scubacao offers the opportunity to learn and help out with coral restoration work. The largest mangrove nursery in the region can be found at our COIA office, we run the Mangrove Adoption Program. The Queen Conch Hatchery is located at the Curacao Sea Aquarium facilities. Further, you can also help us combat invasive species by eating them at Lionfish Caribbean. A regenerative travel industry ensures that Curacao as a destination will exist sustainably for generations to come.
